Treasury Departmt [New York] Oct. 6th 1790

Sir

I have recieved from Nathl Gilman Esquire the Commissioner of Loans for New Hampshire, a letter of the 27th September informing me, that he has transmitted his commission to you with a resignation of his Office.1 I beg leave on this occasion to call to your mind the name of Woodbury Langdon Esquire, who from my recollection of circumstances, and from the result of my enquiries to day, appears to be a suitable person to execute this duty, should none more proper be at this time before you.2 The situation and nature of the office render as early an appointment, as you may deem proper, of consequence to the public interests and individual convenience.3 I have the honor to be with the highest respect, Sir, Your mo: Obedient, & most humble servant

1. For Gilman’s appointment, see GW to the U.S. Senate, 6 Aug. 1790 (second letter), and note 1. No letter of resignation from Gilman has been found, although GW mentioned that he had received it “by the last post” (GW to Hamilton, 15 Oct. 1790, LB, DLC:GW).

2. New Hampshire superior court judge Woodbury Langdon (1739–1805) was a brother of U.S. senator John Langdon. On 17 June 1790 Judge Langdon was impeached by the lower house of the state legislature for not holding various courts since 1788, and his own trial was delayed until January 1791 (DHFC, description begins Linda Grant De Pauw et al., eds. Documentary History of the First Federal Congress of the United States of America, March 4, 1789-March 3, 1791. 20 vols. to date. Baltimore, 1972–. description ends 2:516; Syrett, Hamilton Papers description begins Harold C. Syrett et al., eds. The Papers of Alexander Hamilton. 27 vols. 3. Hamilton received on 25 Oct. 1790 the president’s 15 Oct. letter requesting him to forward the enclosed letter appointing Woodbury Langdon to perform the duties of New Hampshire commissioner of loans “until the next meeting of the Senate of the United States, when, with their consent, a commission will be transmitted to you” (GW to Langdon, 15 Oct. 1790, Df, DNA: RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters; see also GW to Hamilton, 15 Oct. 1790, DLC:GW; Hamilton to John Langdon, 26 Oct. 1790, in Syrett, Hamilton Papers, description begins Harold C.
