Tobias Lear to the Postmasters of Baltimore, Georgetown, and Alexandria

Philadelphia March 27th 1793

Sir,

The President of the U. S. intending to set off for Mount Vernon this day, has directd me to request that you will retain any letters that may come to your office for him after you receive this and will take from the Mails going to Philada that may pass thro[u]gh your Office, such letters as are addressed to the President1—and cause them to be sent to him when he arrives in Baltimore.2 I am Sir &c.

1. GW left for Mount Vernon on this date, arriving there on 2 April (JPP, description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed. The Journal of the Proceedings of the President, 1793–1797. Charlottesville, Va., 1981. description ends 107; GW to D.C. Commissioners, 3 April 1793).

2. Presumably Lear changed this word to “Georgetown” and “Alexandria” in the letters he addressed to the postmasters of those cities.
