To George Washington from Timothy Pickering, 8 September 1795

From Timothy Pickering

Department of State Septemr 8. 1795.

Sir

I find, unfortunately, that the duplicates and triplicates of the setts of letters of credence to the British King were made out by one of the clerks, laid in his Desk and overlooked. I hope they will reach you at Baltimore, and that it will be convenient for you to sign, and return them in Friday’s mail.1 With the greatest respect I remain Sir, your ob. serv.

Timothy Pickering.

LB, DNA: RG 59, Domestic Letters.

1Pickering referred to the letters of credence to George III of Great Britain dated 25 August. One LS listed Thomas Pinckney, who was “instructed, to take the necessary measures for the exchange of the ratifications” (LS, MHi: Adams Papers). Another copy lists John Quincy Adams (MHi: Adams Papers). The State Department letter-book copy leaves blanks, with an option to insert the names of William Allen Deas, Pinckney, or Adams (DNA: RG 59, Credences).

The following Friday was 11 September.
