Tobias Lear to Thomas Jefferson, 4 November 1792

Tobias Lear to Thomas Jefferson

sunday evening [Philadelphia] Novr 4th 1792

The President requests, that if Mr Jefferson intends writing to Mr Pinckney by the British Packet (the mail for which is to be closed at New York on Wednesday) he will be so good as to transmit the enclosed letters to his care.1

AL, DLC: Jefferson Papers. Jefferson docketed this letter as being from “Lear Tob.” and erroneously noted that it was “recd Oct. 4. 92.”

1The enclosed letters have not been identified, but they probably included GW’s letters of 20 Oct. to his British correspondents Edward Newenham, William Davies Shipley, John Sinclair, and Arthur Young, and possibly his letter of the same date to Gouverneur Morris, the U.S. minister to France. For Jefferson’s letter to Thomas Pinckney, the U.S. minister to Great Britain, of 6 Nov., see Jefferson Papers, description begins Julian P. Boyd et al., eds. The Papers of Thomas Jefferson. 41 vols. to date. Princeton, N.J., 1950–. description ends 24:590.
