Tobias Lear to Thomas Jefferson, 24 August 1793

Tobias Lear to Thomas Jefferson

[Philadelphia] August 24th 1793

The President wishes the Secretary of State to let him know what measures, in his opinion, will be proper to be taken on the subject stated by the British Consul Genl.1

AL, DLC: Jefferson Papers. According to Jefferson’s docket, he received this letter on 26 Aug. 1793. Jefferson’s notation at the foot of the text reads, “Bond: letter of Aug. 23.”

1The enclosed letter from Phineas Bond to Thomas Jefferson, written on 23 Aug. at “Chestnut Street,” Philadelphia, concerned the British brig Jane (of Dublin), which the French privateer Citoyen Genet had brought into the port of Philadelphia as a prize on 27 July 1793. In order to receive reparations for the losses occasioned by the capture and sale of the Jane, Bond wrote that he had requested its captain, Donald Stewart, “to prepare an Estimate of the Value of his Vessel—her Cargo, Apparel and Furniture.” Bond then requested “the Mode of Valuation, which the Government of the United States will require” (Jefferson Papers description begins Julian P. Boyd et al., eds. The Papers of Thomas Jefferson. 41 vols. to date. Princeton, N.J., 1950–. description ends , 26:744–45). On the Jane, see also George Hammond to Jefferson, 30 July 1793, ibid., 584–85. According to GW’s executive journal, he received Bond’s letter on 24 Aug. 1793 (JPP description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed. The Journal of the Proceedings of the President, 1793–1797. Charlottesville, Va., 1981. description ends , 230). On the administration’s decision to offer reparations for the Jane, see Cabinet Opinion, 5 Aug. 1793.
