1. Jefferson had enclosed the previous five letters in his first memorandum to GW of 11 July.
2. Jefferson had enclosed the previous seven letters in his second memorandum to GW of 11 July.
3. Jefferson enclosed the letters of 22, 25, June and 9 July in his memorandum to GW of 11–13 July. GW received Genet’s letter of 26 June from Jefferson on 13 July (, 195).

5. GW received the preceding four letters on 13 July (, 195–96). In his letter to Jefferson of 11 July, George Hammond enclosed a deposition from Capt. William Morgan stating that he had no intention of increasing the armaments aboard the British ship Jane during its stay at the port of Philadelphia (, 26:469–70). On 12 July, Jefferson received a translation of a 25 March letter from the Swedish grand chancellor Fredrik Sparre to Swedish consul Richard Söderström. Sparre wrote that the consul should assure the U.S. that Sweden intended to maintain its neutrality in the current European wars, and Söderström attested to the authenticity of his translation on 11 July (DNA: RG 59, Notes from Foreign Consuls, 1789–1906). James Wood, the lieutenant governor of Virginia, had written Jefferson on 8 July to report on the problems faced by the residents of Norfolk in taking care of the refugees who had fled there following a successful insurrection of blacks and mulattoes on Saint Domingue (ibid., 455–56).
