Commissioner of the Revenue Tench Coxe wrote Nathaniel Gorham on 18 Dec. that the president was “disposed to permit your absence from the District . . . provided no injury is likely to arise to the public service” (DNA: RG 58, Letters Sent by the Commissioner of the Revenue and the Revenue Office, 1792–1807).
