1In the letter-book copy an asterisk is inserted at this point. A note at the bottom of the letter reads: “see the sewed book No. 2 in the Department of War.”

2The enclosure has not been found. Henry Knox met with GW on 17 Feb. 1791 and apparently discussed lands designated for officers of the Continental army. They may also have discussed the issue of the relative rank of officers to be appointed in the expanded regular army (see Knox to GW, 1 Mar. 1791). On 18 Feb. 1791 Lear wrote a note to Knox, which reads: “I return, herewith, the book which you left with the President yesterday, containing the names of the Officers of the late Army entitled to lands. The President directs me to inform you that he has not yet received the list which you yesterday promised to furnish him with” (DLC:GW).
