John Stagg, Jr., to Tobias Lear, 18 January 1792

John Stagg, Jr., to Tobias Lear

War Department, Philadelphia, 18 Jan. 1792. Transmits the enclosed letter from the governor of Virginia to the secretary of war, dated 5 Jan. 1792, in order for it to be submitted to the president of the United States.1

ALS, DLC:GW; LB, DLC:GW.

1The enclosure has not been found, but Henry Knox acknowledged its original receipt in a later letter to Gov. Henry Lee. Lee’s letter to the secretary of war probably dealt with federal financing of Virginia’s efforts to protect its southwestern frontier (see Knox to Lee, 2 Feb. 1792, Calendar of Virginia State Papers, description begins William P. Palmer et al., eds. Calendar of Virginia State Papers and Other Manuscripts. 11 vols. Richmond, 1875–93. description ends 5:434–35) Later this day Tobias Lear returned to Knox what was presumably the same letter (DLC:GW).
