From George Washington to Tobias Lear, 10 July 1797

To Tobias Lear

Mount Vernon 10th. July 1797.

My dear Sir,

If nothing happens more than I foresee to prevent it,—I propose to be in the Federal City on Monday or Tuesday in next week; but it will depend on your being there. I request therefore to be informed by the Post if this will be the case; or whether business at that time will call you from it.

When that far I shall extend my ride to the little and great falls of the River,—at the last of which I have not been these eight or nine Years.1 I am Your Affectionate

1. The only three entries that GW made in his diary during July, other than the daily weather record, were on 17 July when he “Went up to the Fedl. City,” on 18 July when he was “In the City all day,” and on 19 July when he “Went by the bridge at the little falls to the Gt. Falls & returned home in the Afternoon” (Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 6:248). July 17 was a Monday.
