Henry Knox to Tobias Lear

[Philadelphia] March 19th 1792.

Dear Sir.

Will you be so good as to inform the President of the United States, that French Peter, who was in France with the Marquis, died last night, and that he will be buried to morrow1—This event will prevent, according to their customs, their waiting on the President until thursday2 12 o’clock. 1The Pennsylvania Gazette (Philadelphia) reported on 28 Mar. the death in Philadelphia on Monday, 19 Mar., of Peter Otsequette (Jaquette), “one of the principal sachems of the Oneida Nation of Indians . . . [who] was educated in France; he accompanied M. de la Fayette to that country on his return from the United States.”

2Knox is referring to Thursday, 22 Mar. 1792.
