To George Washington from Major General Nathanael Greene, 13 July 1780
From Major General Nathanael Greene
Camp. Precaness. 13th July 1780
sir
Inclosed is a form of an order which I wish your Excellency to give me for making the preparations for the intended operations against New-york. The latitude must be as ample, as the provision expected will be extensive. If your Excellency approves thereof, I beg you to sign and send me the order.1 I am, with the greatest respect Your Excellency’s Most obedient Humble Servant
Nath. Greene Q.M.G.
LS, DLC:GW.
Greene also wrote GW on this date from “Camp Prea[k]ness”: “Mr Story waits upon your Excellency to obtain if possible a small supply of cash; the publick dispaches can no longer be forwarded without it” (ALS, DLC:GW). GW’s secretary Robert Hanson Harrison docketed the letter: “money wanted for Expresses.” John Story served under Greene as paymaster for the quartermaster’s department.
