From Alexander Hamilton

Treasury Departmt March 26th—1793.

The Secretary of the Treasury has the honor to submit to the consideration of the President of the United States, a communication from the commissioner of the Revenue, relating to a Contract for the building of a Beacon-boat for the use of the River and Bay of Delaware.1 He can add nothing to what is suggested by the Commissioner; in whose view of the subject he concurs.

1Tench Goxe’s letter to Hamilton has not been identified. On 16 Mar. 1793 Philadelphia shipmaster James Wilson had entered into a contract with William Allibone, the superintendent of the lighthouses in the Delaware Bay area, to build a “Floating Beacon with Two masts and Cages” for $264 by 1 June 1793 (sold by Superior Galleries, Manuscript Society Sale, lot 1471, item 1, 15 Oct. 1991). GW approved Wilson’s contract on 26 Mar. (JPP, description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed. The Journal of the Proceedings of the President, 1793–1797. Charlottesville, Va., 1981. description ends 107).
