Treasy Dept July 23d 1793.

The Secretary of the Treasury has the honor to submit to The President a communication from the Commissioner of the Revenue of the 19 instant.1

The establishment of the compensation to the Keeper of the Portsmouth Light house at the rate therein mentioned appears to the Secretary to be a proper measure.2

1. Tench Coxe’s letter to Hamilton of 19 July has not been identified.

2. GW received this letter on 24 July and approved a salary of $180 per year for the keeper of the Portsmouth, N.H., lighthouse (JPP description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed. The Journal of the Proceedings of the President, 1793–1797. Charlottesville, Va., 1981. description ends , 206). Tobias Lear informed Hamilton of GW’s decision in a letter of 24 July (DNA: RG 26, inventory NC-31, entry 17J, Records Relating to the DLC Exhibit, “Papers Signed by Tobias Lear, 1789–93”).
