[Philadelphia] December 29th 1792.
The Secretary of the Treasury has the honor to enclose for the consideration of the President, the translation of a letter of the 27th of December, which he has received from mister de la Forest.1 He will wait upon the President on Monday for his orders concerning the subject of it.2

1. Neither the original receiver’s copy nor Hamilton’s translation of the letter from Antoine-René-Charles Mathurin de La Forest, the French consul general, has been identified.
2. GW submitted Hamilton’s translation of La Forest’s letter to Thomas Jefferson for consideration. According to Jefferson’s letter to GW of 1 Jan. 1793, La Forest had requested that the salaries of the French consuls residing in the United States be paid through advances on the payments that the United States made on its Revolutionary War debt to France. Jefferson approved La Forest’s request, and GW notified Hamilton of this in a letter written on 1 January.
