Treasury Departmt March 23d 1793.

The Secretary of the Treasury has the honor to submit to The President of the United States the enclosed communication from the Commissioner of the Revenue.

From the nature of the circumstances represented it appears to the Secretary advisable to embrace the offer which is made by Joseph Anthony & son.1

1. On 26 Mar., Hamilton apparently presented this letter to GW along with the accompanying letter from Tench Coxe to Hamilton. Although Coxe’s letter has not been identified, GW’s executive journal indicates that Coxe recommended approval of a proposal that Hamilton presented from Philadelphia merchants Joseph Anthony, Sr. (d. 1798) and Thomas P. Anthony (d. 1793), “to furnish 1000 Galls. of Oil for the Light-Ho. on Cape Henry @ 3/3 per Gal.” GW approved the purchase that same date because it “is the lowest for wh. it can now be purchasd in this City” (JPP, description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed. The Journal of the Proceedings of the President, 1793–1797. Charlottesville, Va., 1981. description ends 107).
