York [Pa.] 25th Decemr [1777]

Sir

I had the honour of writing to Your Excellency yesterday by Colo. Boudinot.

This Instant was brought to me a Resolve of Congress dated the 24th in favor of Colonel Barton, which will accompany this.1

I have in obedience to that Act signed & delivered to Colo. Barton a Commission of Colonel in the Army—that Gentleman will be bearer of this & intends immediately to wait on your Excellency in hopes of receiving such Commands as will give him opportunities of being further servicable to his Country. I remain With very great Esteem & Regard.

LB, DNA:PCC, item 13. The LB indicates this letter was sent “by Colo. [William] Barton.”

1. William Barton, Congress resolved on 24 Dec., “on account of his enterprizing spirit, and his merit in taking Major General Prescot prisoner,” is promoted to colonel and “recommended” to GW “to be employed in such services as he may deem best adapted to his genius” (JCC description begins Worthington Chauncey Ford et al., eds. Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774-1789. 34 vols. Washington, D.C., 1904–37. description ends , 9:1051).
