Tobias Lear to Captain Hollis, 26 July 1790
Tobias Lear to Captain Hollis
New York, 26 July 1790. Requests delivery to the bearer, Francis Parman, of the three mares that GW sent on 1 June to be put to John Jay’s horse1 in Bedford Town, Westchester County, N.Y., and asks that an account of the cost for their care and arrangements for its payment also be transmitted through Parman.
LB, DLC:GW.
The name Hollis does not appear in the Federal Census of 1790 for Bedford Town or on Westchester County Revolutionary War muster rolls. Lear may have meant to direct the letter to Abraham or Jesse Holley (Holly), both of Bedford, the latter of whom reached at least the rank of lieutenant in the county militia during the war (
196; 227).1. For Jay’s Spanish stallion, see Jay to GW, 1 Mar. 1789 and note 1.
