From Timothy Pickering

War-Office Octr 31. 1795.

The Secretary of War respectfully informs the President that General Rochambeau, who some time ago proposed sailing for France, now expects to depart next Monday,1 & will gladly take any letters or commands with which the President may have occasion to honour him.

1. The following Monday was 2 November. Donatien-Marie-Joseph de Vimeur, vicomte de Rochambeau, had come to the United States in 1794 while on parole after surrendering Martinique to British forces. He recently had been exchanged for a British general. His departure for France was reported in the Aurora General Advertiser (Philadelphia) on 13 November.
