Philadelphia March 31st 1796

Sir.

With this you will receive an essay designed to introduce accuracy in the execution of new surveys, and permanency to the work when executed; which from the present improved state of the Sciences, may be done with ease, and expedition, by any person properly qualified for a surveyor.1 The method which I have proposed, will neither require more time, nor be attended with more expense, than the one commonly practised. 1. Ellicott sent his Several Methods by Which Meridional Lines May be found with Ease and Accuracy: Recommended to the Attention of the Surveyors in the United States (Philadelphia, 1796). The volume was in GW’s library at the time of his death (Griffin, Catalogue of the Washington Collection, description begins Appleton P. C. Griffin, comp. A Catalogue of the Washington Collection in the Boston Athenæum. Cambridge, Mass., 1897. description ends 74).
