You would oblige me by receiving the contents of the enclosed order;1 and then, by informing me of the price the Tobacco would fetch.2 With esteem, I am Sir Your very Hble Servt

1. For the enclosed order from John Francis Mercer to Benjamin W. Jones of 5 April, authorizing the payment of past rent due on GW’s land in Montgomery County, Md., see n.2 of Mercer to GW, 5 April.
2. Deakins made no mention of tobacco in his reply of 30 April, in which he wrote: “Your much Esteemd favor of the 11th Current, with an Order on Mr Benjamin Jones for Rents, came to hand in due time, but my Indisposition has prevented my Answe⟨r⟩ring it till now. I have not yet seen Mr Jones, but will call on him soon, and do the Needfull” (DLC:GW). It was not until 31 May that he notified GW that the rent due him amounted to 4,500 lbs. of tobacco per year.
