From George Washington to Thomas Jefferson, 7 October 1792

To Thomas Jefferson

Mount Vernon, 7 Oct. 1792. Forwards to Philadelphia Jefferson’s papers that were “found in the Road” by one of GW’s neighbors, except for a letter to Daniel Carroll of Rock Creek, Md., which has been sent to the Alexandria post office.1

1Jefferson wrote to James Madison from Bladensburg, Md., on 1 Oct. that he had “unfortunately dropped” some papers “in the road between Mount Vernon and Alexandria” (see Jefferson Papers, description begins Julian P. Boyd et al., eds. The Papers of Thomas Jefferson. 41 vols. to date. Princeton, N.J., 1950–. description ends 24:432–33, and note, which lists the dropped papers, including a letter of undetermined date from Madison to Carroll).
