Henry Knox to Tobias Lear, 30 May 1793
Henry Knox to Tobias Lear
Philadelphia 30th May 1793
Dear Sir
Be pleased to submit the enclosed letter just received from the Governor of Georgia.1 Yours
H. Knox
ALS, DLC:GW; LB, DLC:GW.
1. Edward Telfair, in his letter to Knox of 8 May, reported that he had called for “immediate preparations of war,” following “horrid barbarities committed” by Indians in Georgia. For the complete text of this letter, as well as Knox’s response of 10 June, see 1:364, 369. GW’s cabinet already had met on 29 May to discuss Indian relations in Georgia (Cabinet Opinion on Georgia and the Creek Indians, 29 May 1793, and note 1). For Telfair’s earlier efforts to secure federal military assistance, see Lear to Knox, 21 Jan., n.1.
