Henry Knox to Tobias Lear, 27 April 1792
Henry Knox to Tobias Lear
[Philadelphia] 27 April 1792. “I am unwilling to trouble the President with so many papers, but it seems necessary he should be acquainted with those what are now enclosed1 from Mr Seagrove, and from Govr Blount.”2
ALS, DLC:GW; LB, DLC:GW.
1. Knox had sent Lear on 26 April some unidentified papers to be submitted to the president (DLC:GW). The enclosures to this letter have not been identified, but the papers from William Blount might have been Blount’s letter to Knox of 20 Mar. 1792 that covered various letters and reports concerning the growing discontent among the inhabitants of the five lower Cherokee towns (see 4:129–30).
2. Knox added the postscript “All quiet at Pittsburg and its neighbourhood” to the receiver’s copy.
