sir.
In answer to your letter of yesterdays date1—I have to inform you that no blankets can be issued, until I have obtained an exact return of the quantity in Store—and the deficiences of the Troops on the other side of Hudsons River—As soon as these points are ascertained in order to an equal and general distribution—no time will be lost in furnishing the quotas to the Troops2—I am Sir &.
Df, in John Laurens’s writing, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW.
1. Maxwell’s letter to GW of 8 Feb. has not been found.
2. GW still lacked this information when he wrote to Philip Van Cortlandt on 16 March. For GW’s views on the deficiency of blankets, see particularly his letter to Moses Hazen of 14 March.
