From James Angell

Baltimore May 16, 179[7]

Sir

The above account would have been forwarded ere this had I not been absent from America.1

James Angell

ALS, DLC:GW.

In August 1789 William Goddard made his wife’s brother James Angell (d. 1797) of Rhode Island his partner in publishing his Maryland Journal in Baltimore. In February 1793 Angell became the sole publisher, and in October 1794 he sold his interest in the paper.

1The “above account” was:

George Washington, Esqe To James Angell  Dr.
1793 April 2d To advertising Knight of Malta £0.15.
1794 Febry 28 to do do 10 Pub. 1. 0. 7½
To the Maryland Journal from July 1 1792 to Octr 1 1794 £2. 7. 3½
£4. 2.11

The advertisement that ran in the Maryland Journal and Baltimore Advertiser notified the public that Knight of Malta, the jack given to GW in 1786 by Lafayette, would “cover at Mount Vernon” (2 April 1793). For an earlier advertising of the services of both Knight of Malta and of Royal Gift, see Tobias Lear to William Goddard and James Angell, 6 Mar. 1790, and note 1 of that document.
