From William Herbert

Alexandria 27th October 1797—

Dear Sir—

Since I had the pleasure of Seeing you last I purchased four Shares more of Bank Stock for Miss Custis, the Evidence of which, I now hold Subject to your order, those are laid in, on the Same terms, with the Stock delivered you 1—I am With great Respect & Esteem—Dear Sir—Yr most obedt Hble Servt

Wm Herbert

ALS, DLC:GW.

1GW’s letter of 9 Oct. to Herbert regarding the purchase of stock in the Bank of Alexandria has not been found, but see Herbert to GW of that date. On 10 Jan. 1798 Eleanor Parke Custis gave GW her proxy “to vote at the next annual Election for nine Directors of the Bank of Alexandria” (ViMtvL). GW does not indicate in his ledger that he purchased stock in the Bank of Alexandria after 1796 (see note 2 in Herbert to GW, 9 October).
