1. William Cushing, associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, was currently riding the middle circuit, which consisted of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. On 23 Oct. he wrote John Jay from Newcastle, Del., that he intended to go “from Easton in Maryland for Kent [Island?], & thence across the Chesapeak an 8 or 9 mile ferry, to Annapolis, then to the federal city, perhaps buy a house lot there, & so onward to Richmond” (Marcus and Perry, Documentary History of the Supreme Court, description begins Maeva Marcus et al., eds.
