[Charlottesville], “Ce Mardi après midi” [18 Sep. 1792?]. He encloses a letter from Mme. Bellanger and the one received from Mr. Homassel. He also sends a new letter for Mr. Homassel which seems more concise and analogous to the subject than the one he delivered to TJ this morning.

The letter from Plumard de Bellanger has not been identified, but the missing letter from the Philadelphia merchant Charles Homassel was probably that of 27 Aug. 1792 advising Derieux that he had received his merchandise shipped from France the previous May. Homassel’s letter was acknowledged in Derieux’s reply of 15 Sep. 1792 (MHi)—almost certainly the letter for Homassel sent to Monticello in the morning but evidently withheld by TJ in favor of Derieux’s more concise reply, which has not been found. This evidence suggests that Derieux’s note to TJ was probably dated Tuesday, 18 Sep. 1792.
