From George Washington to Jeremiah Wadsworth, 18 June 1778

To Jeremiah Wadsworth

Head Quarters [Valley Forge] 18th June 1778.

Sir.

You are immediately to appoint an active person in your department, for the purpose of collecting and taking possession of any provisions which the enemy may have left behind them in Philadelphia—as well as for making any other necessary arrangements there relative to your department—particular orders for which he will receive from Major General Arnold, who will command in the city.1 I am Sir your most obedt Servt

1Wadsworth sent a copy of this letter to assistant commissary general John Chaloner on 19 June, writing: “the above is a ⟨Copy⟩ of his Excellencys order to me—You are hereby appointed ⟨to⟩ collect & take possession of all provisions that may be found in the Citty of Philedelphia and to execute every matter in my Department & within this Citty till further directed by Col. Blaine D.C.G. of purchases—or Your Hum. Servt Jereh Wadsworth” (PHi: Chaloner and White Collection).
