Marseilles the 21st october 1818—

Sir

by order1 of Thos Jefferson Esqr late President of the U. States, I Remit you herein Inclosed; viz;

TJ 1 Bill of Lading for wines & other articles for his own Acct2 marked as in Margin—

TRJ 1 Bill of Lading for wines for the acct3 of Ths Jefferson Randolph Esqr his Grand Son in Law;—

which I have Shipped on the Brig Planter of Petersburg Del anderson Master, bound for Petersburg—Virginia, to your Consignation;—

you will Please, after his arival, to Receive Said articles, and to forward them as Soon as Possible to Ths Jefferson Esqr at Monticello, & to his Grand Son in Law what belongs to him.—

you will Please, also, in Conformity of the Instructions of Ths Jefferson Esqr to make Separate accounts or Bills for all your Disbursments, for Freight, Duties & other Expenses; one against Said Late President, and the other against his G. Son in Law, as I am Directed by his G. Father to make4 Separate Invoices for Each of them, which however I Send to the Grand Father;

This Brig being Ready to Sail out, as I have not5 been able to Collect all the Bills for their Cost and Charges, I cannot make out Said Invoices, nor transmit them to you, for the Recovery of the Duties of Importation in the U.S. of Said articles;—which I will do by the way of Bordeaux or havre; you will please to Inform, on arival, Ths Jefferson Esqr of this Shipment to your Consignation, not having time to do it, myself, by this opportunity & not being yet Recovered of a Serious Bilious Fever!6 with a tender of my best Services, in whatever I may be usefull to you or to your Friends Recommended by you to me, in this Corner of the Mediteranean within my Consular District; I have the honor to be Respectfully

Mallory Norfk Collr.  Jos. Jones Collr.” Enclosures not found.

4Instead of remainder of sentence, RC reads “out them, but to Send to him, however as I do, & as directed my Invoices or Bills, to him;—you may then do the Same for your Disbursments.”

5In RC sentence to this point reads “This brig being on the Point of Sailing out, & as I have been Severely Sick Since the 24th Sepbr last, till four Days ago, that I am Recovering; I have not.”

6Instead of text from “Bordeaux or havre” to this point, RC reads “havre or Bordeaux, & I hope that my Letter to you, will Reach you before the arival at Petersburg of the Brig Planter; as I apprehend of not having time to write Two Lines to my old Respectble Friend & Protector Ths Jefferson, by this Brig, by the above-mentioned motives (which I will do by the ways I mention to you) I will beg of you to Inform him, on the arival of the Planter, that She has on Board, all the articles ordered by him, Except the Smyrna Raisins, Sans Pepins, which I could not Procure, as there is none to be Got in Town; it was too late when his order Reached me, on the 13th august, as the Raisins of Smyrna, when ordered from this, arives here in March & till the End of april, yearly & are Soon Consumed, or Sent out from this City, after their Landing on Shore.”
