1This note could have been written at almost any time during BF’s first or second missions. It is placed here on the strength of two letters: BF’s to Raspe of Sept. 9, 1766 (above, XIII, 407) in which BF writes of expecting to see Michell in the winter of 1767 and Michell’s to BF of Sept. 6, 1767 (below, pp. 247–8), which indicates a recent meeting between the two men.
