Dear Sir
I inclose you a Letter which came to my hands last Evening & wh. needs no Comment from me— Mr. Grand commissioned me to desire that you would this Evening favour him with something which is to be sent to Amsterdam & wh. he shall have an opportunity of sending early tomorrow Morning— Not finding you at home I am constrained to execute my Commission in this manner—

4. Charles-Jean Garnier, French chargé d’affaires in London, is identified above, XXII, 374n. Arranging a dinner for Garnier is the subject of another undated letter from Bancroft, written on a Tuesday: Gamier is engaged on Wednesday, and as Bancroft knows BF is unavailable on Thursday, he will set up the dinner for Friday. APS. We assign both letters to 1778 because of Garnier’s association with the commission members that year: Butterfield, John Adams Diary, II, 298n.
