With the greatest Respect I have the Honor to be Dear Sir Your most Humble & most Devoted Servant

Edwd. Bancroft

P.S. Mr. Garnier begs that his respectful Compliments may be made to you; he will do himself the honor of dining with you the first day that you dine at home, Wednesday excepted—4

Addressed: To / the Hon’ble / Benjamin Franklin / Commissioner &c &c

Endorsed: Bancroft

[Note numbering follows the Franklin Papers source.]

4Charles-Jean Garnier, French chargé d’affaires in London, is identified above, XXII, 374n. Arranging a dinner for Garnier is the subject of another undated letter from Bancroft, written on a Tuesday: Gamier is engaged on Wednesday, and as Bancroft knows BF is unavailable on Thursday, he will set up the dinner for Friday. APS. We assign both letters to 1778 because of Garnier’s association with the commission members that year: Butterfield, John Adams Diary, II, 298n.
