7. The physician who had recently asked BF for a letter of introduction to George Washington. He was on his way to Maryland: XXXVII, 650–3, 745–6.
8. These probably included a letter from BF to Washington (now missing) and a passport (mentioned in Henry Harford to BF, [before June 7, 1783], APS.) Once in New York, Shuttleworth forwarded BF’s letter to Washington under cover of his own letter dated Dec. 22 (Library of Congress).
