To Benjamin Franklin from Richard Bache, 28 April 1784

From Richard Bache

Philadelphia April 28. 1784

Dear & Hond. Sir

I take this opportunity Via Amsterdam with pleasure to acquaint you, of Sally’s safe delivery of a fine boy, whom we intend calling Richard;8 and that she is well down Stairs again, and the Child perfectly hearty— We have no Letters from you since Barney’s arrival,9 we are however flattering ourselves with the pleasure of seeing you this approaching Summer; Whenever you come you will find the circle of your old Friends decreased; Dr. Bond & Mr. Rhoads are both gone to the Land of Spirits;1 Mr. Roberts2 is still alive, but very infirm— The Family is well; I am looking out for a Summer retreat for them, in a healthy spot; but the great demand there is for these kind of places, owing to the number of Strangers lately arrived among us, renders it difficult to procure an eligible place on reasonable terms—3

Sally & the Children join me in Duty & Affection to yourself, Temple & Benny— I am ever Dear sir Your affectionate son

Rich. Bache

Dr. Franklin

[Note numbering follows the Franklin Papers source.]

8Richard, Jr., was born on March 11: I, lxv.

9Capt. Barney arrived in Annapolis on March 5: XLI, 313n.

1Thomas Bond (II, 240n) died on March 26 and Samuel Rhoads (II, 406n) on April 7: ANB, under Bond; Henry D. Biddle, “Colonial Mayors of Philadelphia. Samuel Rhoads, 1774,” PMHB, XIX (1895), 71.

2Probably BF’s old friend Hugh Roberts (V, 11n).

3In a now-missing letter of Dec. 27, 1783, BF had directed RB to rent “a house in the Country for the family” Penrose R. Hoopes, “Cash Dr to Benjamin Franklin,” PMHB, LXXX (1956), 64. This was probably in response to SB’s Nov. 5 letter expressing a desire for a summer “retreat” to vitiate the toll the heat took on her children: XLI, 178–9.
