Certificate for Ephraim Brasher1

[New York, October 26, 1795]

I certify as will appear by letters on file in the Office2 that I did while Secretary of the Treasury on behalf of the Government empower Mr Seton3 to procure the within mentioned assays to be made and that compensation was due for the same from the U States.

1Ephraim Brasher, a goldsmith, was also an assistant justice of the peace of New York City in 1795.

H’s certificate accompanied Brasher’s account on October 24, 1795, submitted to the Treasury Department for payment for assays made in 1791 (ADS, RG 217, Miscellaneous Treasury Accounts, 1790–1894, Account No. 7363, National Archives).

Seton, who had been cashier of the Bank of New York, had resigned that position in June, 1794. See Seton to H, June 16, 1794.

3Brasher’s account was accompanied by the following note, dated October 24, 1795, from Seton: “I Do Certify, That at the request of Alexr. Hamilton Esq. the then Secretary of the Treasury I did employ Mr. Ephraim Brasher to make the Assays above mentioned & believe his Charge for the same to be just” (ADS, RG 217, Miscellaneous Treasury Accounts, 1790–1894, Account No. 7363, National Archives).

On November 27, 1795, Warrant No. 5502 was issued to Brasher for twenty-seven dollars (D, RG 217, Miscellaneous Treasury Accounts, 1790–1894, Account No. 7363, National Archives).
