New York, November 22, 1799. “I request that you will send a non commsd officer to attend upon my office. It is left to your discretion whether the attendance shall be diurnal, periodical, or permanent. The office is No. 36 Greenwich Street.”2

1. Read, a captain in the Second Regiment of Artillerists and Engineers, was stationed at West Point. See the enclosure to H to James McHenry, first letter of April 26, 1799. Read should not be confused with Lieutenant Colonel James Read, commandant of the Sixth Regiment of Infantry, who was stationed at Raleigh, North Carolina. See H to Read, November 2, 1799.
