Richmond May 31. 1793

Sir

Mr. Underwood of Goochland, requests me to inclose some certificates respecting his son. He has forwarded such to the war office, but fearing the subscribers may not be so well known there as to yourself, solicits you to give them the weight they deserve. We both trust that our wish to promote a deserving soldier will be a sufficient apology for giving you this trouble. I am sir your obdt Servt.

Mr. Underwood: probably Thomas Underwood, a friend of James Madison who represented Goochland County in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1777 to 1790. his son was probably Thomas Underwood, who waited almost two years for his appointment in February 1795 as a lieutenant in the Army Corps of Artillerists and Engineers (Madison, Papers, description begins William T. Hutchinson, Robert A. Rutland, J. C. A. Stagg, and others, eds., The Papers of James Madison, Chicago and Charlottesville, 1962-, 21 vols. description ends xii, 249n; TJ to Walker, 27 June 1793; JEP description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States … to the Termination of the Nineteenth Congress, Washington, D.C., 1828 description ends , i, 173, 174).

A missing letter from Walker to TJ, written from Richmond on 21 May 1793, is recorded in SJL as received 24 June 1793.
