Zachariah Poulson, Jr. (1761–1844), succeeded David C. Claypoole as publisher of the first daily newspaper in the United States, which he continued in Philadelphia as Poulson’s American Daily Advertiser from 1800 until 1839. He was a founder of the Philadelphia Society for Alleviating the Miseries of Public Prisons, one of the managers of the Pennsylvania Hospital, and served as librarian and director of the Library Company of Philadelphia ( , 2:947; , 1:426; Henry Simpson, The Lives of Eminent Philadelphians, Now Deceased [Philadelphia, 1859], 805–7; ).
