Messrs. Watson & Higginbotham

The postmaster general has applied to me to recommend a postmaster for Milton to succeed mr Camden who has resigned. being not sufficiently acquainted with the characters there who might be proper and willing to accept the office, I take the liberty of solliciting you to recommend one, whom you shall consider as fit for the office and who shall consent to accept of it. it is interesting to us all not to let the post office there fall for want of a postmaster. accept assurances of my esteem & best wishes.

For the proposed partnership of John Watson and David Higginbotham, both merchants at Milton, see Vol. 35:28. Watson had served as postmaster at Milton from March 1798 to March 1799. Watson & Higginbotham’s reply of 2 Apr., recorded in SJL as received on the 6th, has not been found, but on 6 Apr., Richard Anderson was appointed postmaster at Milton to succeed Marbell CAMDEN (Stets, Postmasters description begins Robert J. Stets, Postmasters & Post offices of the United States 1782–1811, Lake Oswego, Ore., 1994 description ends , 264).
