From Thomas Jefferson to John Barnes, 26 June 1802
To John Barnes
June 26. 1802.
Th: Jefferson being to go into the country tomorrow will thank mr Barnes for 25. D. in small bills.
RC (ViU: Edgehill-Randolph Papers); endorsed by Barnes; endorsed by TJ: “Barnes John.”
GO INTO THE COUNTRY TOMORROW: in his financial records under 27 June, TJ recorded paying 68 ½ cents for ferriage “to & from the Carrs.” It is not clear which members of the Carr family TJ met with that day, nor where or why the visit took place. It may have been at the residence of his nephew, Samuel Carr, or his in-law, Overton Carr, both of whom resided near Washington. The visit probably related to the pending marriage of another nephew, Dabney Carr, who married Elizabeth Carr the following day, 28 June. Like his brother Samuel, Dabney married one of Overton Carr’s daughters ( , 2:1076; , 5 [1897–98], 441; , 3:27; Vol. 34:5n; Overton Carr to TJ, 25 Dec. 1801; TJ to Mary Jefferson Eppes, 3 Mch. and 1 July 1802).
