Sir
Having heretofore transmitted for your consideration several communications respecting certain infractions of the Act of Congress of last session & of the State laws which forbid the importation of Slaves, I now do myself the honor of enclosing a letter from the collector of Charleston & copies of a correspondence between him & the collector of Beaufort on the same subject.
I have the honor to be with great respect Sir Your obedt. Servt.

RC (DLC); at foot of text: “The President of the United States Virginia Milton”; endorsed by TJ as received from the Treasury Department on 29 Aug. and “importn of negroes into Georgia” and so recorded in SJL. Enclosures not found, but on a separate sheet, dated 22 Aug., Gallatin wrote:
“Enclose in the letter to the President of this date copies of
letter of collector of Charleston to the Secretary
letter of collector of Beaufort to the collector of Charleston
Answer of the collector of Charleston” (same).
