Nathaniel Bowditch to Thomas Jefferson, 30 March 1818

Salem March 30 1818.

Mr Bowditch presents his most respectful compliments to the Honorable Mr Jefferson late President of the United States—requests the honor of his acceptance of the pamphlet which accompanies this note—wishing him health & happiness.

RC (DLC); dateline at foot of text; addressed: “The Honorable Mr Jefferson late President of the United States”; endorsed by TJ as received 8 Apr. 1818 and so recorded in SJL. Enclosure: Bowditch, Mathematical Papers from the fourth volume of the Memoirs of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (Cambridge, Mass., 1818; Poor, Jefferson’s Library description begins Nathaniel P. Poor, Catalogue. President Jefferson’s Library, 1829 description ends , 7 [no. 303]; TJ’s copy in MBPLi, inscribed by Bowditch on title page [trimmed]: “[. . .] late President of the United Sta[. . .] from the Author).”

The enclosure reprinted papers Bowditch had recently published in the Memoirs of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, vol. 4, pt. 1 (1818): 28–76, 110–9, two of which discussed and suggested revisions to portions of the famed Traité de Mécanique Céleste, 5 vols. (Paris, 1799–1825) of Pierre Simon, marquis de Laplace.
