Petty Vaughan to Thomas Jefferson, 29 March 1819

From Petty Vaughan

Monticello Mar: 29th 1819.

Dear Sir

Enclosed I take the liberty of handing you three hastily written papers:

1—On the Culture of Swedish Turnip.

2—On that of Guinea Grass.

3—Respecting Ox Yokes, with an accompanying Model.

Should they prove useful either to yourself; or the agricultural Gentlemen of this State I shall be highly gratified.

It is my intention to proceed from hence to London; there to reside for the present. If I can be of any service to you, or to your family or friends; I pray you to command me freely on all occasions.

I have the honor to be, Dr Sr.

Your respectful Hble: Servt

Petty Vaughan

RC (MHi); at foot of text: “Hon: Thomas Jefferson”; endorsed by TJ as received 29 Mar. 1819 and so recorded in SJL. Enclosed papers on rutabaga (Swedish turnip) and guinea grass printed below; other enclosure not found.

Petty Vaughan (1788–1854), merchant, was the third son of TJ correspondent Benjamin Vaughan. Born in London, he moved with his family to Hallowell, District of Maine, in the mid-1790s and served briefly as a militia lieutenant shortly before the War of 1812. Vaughan returned to England after his 1819 visit to Monticello and became a business associate of his uncle William Vaughan. A member of many English commercial and philanthropic organizations and a supporter of the American Colonization Society, he was elected in 1842 to the American Philosophical Society. An 1851 census described Vaughan as a “West India Merchant.” He died in London (John H. Sheppard, Reminiscences of the Vaughan Family [1865], 13, 26–7; Emma Huntington Nason, Old Hallowell on the Kennebec [1909], 91; MHi: Vaughan Family Papers; UkNA: RG 4, General Register Office, Registers of Births, Marriages and Deaths; ANB description begins John A.
