Petty Vaughan (1788–1854), merchant, was the third son of TJ correspondent Benjamin Vaughan. Born in London, he moved with his family to Hallowell, District of Maine, in the mid-1790s and served briefly as a militia lieutenant shortly before the War of 1812. Vaughan returned to England after his 1819 visit to Monticello and became a business associate of his uncle William Vaughan. A member of many English commercial and philanthropic organizations and a supporter of the American Colonization Society, he was elected in 1842 to the American Philosophical Society. An 1851 census described Vaughan as a “West India Merchant.” He died in London (John H.
