Sir

Youl observe by the inclosd1 what is requested of me. I know nothing off the Bearer. but can safely say Colo. Tayloe2 is a Gentleman of great Honour & presume must know something of the Man therefore am in hopes his own behavor will be the Only recommendation. & am Sir your most obedt hum. Servt

John Champe (d. 1763) of Lamb’s Creek was a planter in King George County. His daughter was married to Samuel Washington, GW’s younger brother.

1The enclosure was the following letter from John Tayloe to John Champe, dated 27 Sept. and addressed to “Dear friend”: “As I have but a slight acquaintance with Collo Washington must ask the favour of you to recomend John Sallard the bearer to his favour he is the brother of my Steward I have wrote to Capt. Woodward in his favour I am Dr Sr Your Afft frd & Obedt.”

2John Tayloe (1721–1779), who in 1758 completed Mt. Airy, his home on the Rappahannock in Richmond County, was a member of the Ohio Company and became a member of the Virginia Council in 1757.
