From hence I continued my journey to Colonel Baylors,1 when I was overtaken by an Express sent from Colonel Stephen, informing, that a Body of Indians had fallen on the Inhabitants, killed many of them, destroyed and Burnt several of their Houses.
Thereupon wrote to the Governor, and returned immediately to Fredericksburgh; and wrote a second Letter to the Governour, one to the Speaker, &c.2

1. John Baylor (1705–1772) had a plantation and elegant house, called Newmarket, on the Mattaponi River in Caroline County. GW presumably spent the night of 7 Oct. here, after riding to the colonel’s house from Todd’s ordinary.
2. Adam Stephen’s letter was written from Winchester on 4 Oct. GW’s letter to Dinwiddie written from Colonel Baylor’s on 8 Oct. was not copied in GW’s letter book, nor has it been found in Dinwiddie’s papers. His letters of 8 Oct. to Dinwiddie and Speaker John Robinson written in Fredericksburg follow this memorandum in his letter book.
