1. Daniel McCarty (d. 1792) was a wealthy planter living at Mount Air on Accotink Creek in Fairfax County.

3. GW charged William Byrd for “Rent of my Houses & Lotts in Williamsburg” £40 on 1 Oct. 1762 and 1763 and £45 in 1764 and 1765 (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 135). Richard Starke rented the house, which belonged to John Parke Custis, for his mother in 1768 and 1769.

4. For the judgment in General Court against William Bowler, one of the Custis debtors, see doc. III-B, n.18, in Settlement of the Daniel Parke Custis Estate, 20 April 1759–5 Nov. 1761.

5. The ferryman at the crossing on Occoquan Creek about ten miles south of Mount Vernon was a slave belonging to George Mason of Gunston Hall, the owner of the ferry.

6. Often when en route to Fredericksburg and Williamsburg, GW spent the night at Dumfries on Quantico Creek in Prince William County.

7. William Todd’s ordinary was in King and Queen County at the ferry (later bridge) crossing of the Mattaponi River into King William County.

8. Edward Pye Chamberlayne (1725–c.1769) lived on the Pamunkey River near the Custises’ White House in New Kent County. On 24 April GW was “At my Plantation in King William [Claiborne’s]” (Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 1:309).

9. Alexander Finnie bought the Raleigh Tavern in Williamsburg in 1749 and sold it in 1752 but continued, at least intermittently, to be a tavern keeper in the town until his death in 1769.

10. John Warrington was a Custis tenant in Williamsburg. On 11 Nov. 1761 Joseph Valentine paid him 6s. 6d. for “Making one Flaniel Wastcoat” for GW (ViHi: Custis Papers).
