1. GW’s account with Fielding Lewis indicates that GW received the £21 on 28 July in “Cash at Fredericksburg” (, folio 8). Lewis owed GW £162.18.2 current money for a carriage that GW had ordered for him from Robert Cary & Company. See GW to Cary, 16 Mar. 1762, n.1.
2. This is probably William Buffington whose will in Hampshire County is dated 1784. Buffington seems to have lived in Hampshire since the 1750s. He had land on the South Branch and Patterson Creek, including lot no. 15 in the South Branch Manor.
3. The £21.14 was to “pay Parish Levies,” 1.12.6; “Mason—for Dairy,” £6.1; “Joiner—Ditto,” £5; “Mower’s—Meadow,” £2.0.6; “buy a horse,” £7 (, folio 131).
4. GW owed Richard Stephenson £2.2.6 for a firkin of butter weighing nearly ninety-eight pounds (, folio 3).
6. Allan Macrae was a merchant in Dumfries with whom GW did business.
7. This was the total charge for the passage from England and the travel expenses of Walter Magowan; later this year GW charged it against the accounts of his wards, one-half to John Parke Custis and one-half to Martha Parke Custis. See Washington’s Guardian Accounts, 30 April 1764.
8. “Allans,” where GW frequently stopped, was probably at Dumfries. See Cash Accounts, January 1760, n.6.
9. This may have been Charles Steuart, a Norfolk merchant with whom GW dealt. See GW’s diary entry of 9 Feb. 1760, in , 1:235.
10. GW seems to have paid an annual fee for the use of the ferry of James Hunter, Jr. (1746–1788), on the Rappahannock at Fredericksburg. See ibid., 296.
11. William Houston (died c.1771) owned and operated a tannery and saddlery in Fredericksburg.
12. Dr. Hugh Mercer (c.1725–1777), a Scot who served in the Pennsylvania forces in the Forbes campaign of 1758, had settled in Fredericksburg. McLean may be Dr. Lauglan Macleane.
