AD, General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 230–32.

For William Byrd’s renting of property in Williamsburg, see Cash Accounts, April 1764, n.7.

GW paid Charles Carter (1732–1806), of Corotoman and Shirley, £1.3 for “1 Cutting Box & knife” (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 219).

In his account with John Relfe (see note 1), GW credits the merchant’s account £6 for “D. Briggs order on Waltr Magowan” (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 229). The £7.10 is in Maryland currency.

See Cash Accounts, February 1766. The £1.10 is in Maryland currency.

The £5 is partial payment for the kitchen that GW’s carpenters built for Humphrey Peake in 1764 as well as for work done by GW’s smith. See General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 187.

In his account with Charles Washington, on 20 May 1766 GW credits his brother with George Thrift’s payments of 1,017 pounds of tobacco and £1.10; in an entry dated five days later he enters 1,017 pounds of tobacco and £1.10 as “Cash & Tobacco paid you being Rent receivd from George Thrift” (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 197). George Thrift was a planter in Fairfax County.

William Little lived in Frederick County.

Of this amount, £23.6.8 was to pay to Fielding Lewis GW’s “third of the purchase Money of Doctr [James] Wrights Land” (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 193). See Cash Accounts, December 1764, n.3.

For Campbell’s identity, see Cash Accounts, November 1764, n.10. For reference to the building of GW’s schooner, see Cash Accounts, December 1765, n.6.

This is probably Robert Tucker of Norfolk.

GW paid the bond which came to a little more than the balance due John Chowning from his share of the corn and tobacco that he raised in 1764 as overseer of River farm. See General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 185. Edward Traverse is probably Edward Champion Travis (1721–1779), burgess for Jamestown from 1752 to 1765.

Thomas Hodge of Leedstown was an importer of indentured servants.

GW bought the book of devotionals for his employee Sarah Harle. See Cash Accounts, December 1764, n.1, and General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 216.

Joseph Pullett, who was married in Norfolk in 1764, opened a tavern in Williamsburg as a “young beginner” probably in 1765, and he died before 25 June 1767. See Virginia Gazette (Purdie and Dixon; Williamsburg), 9 May, 6 June, 4 July 1766, 25 June 1767.

The horse Traveller belonging to John Tayloe (1721–1779) of Mount Airy, Richmond County, won the Williamsburg Purse on 25 April, beating with ease horses owned by Lewis Burwell and Francis Whiting (Virginia Gazette [Purdie and Dixon; Williamsburg], 25 April 1766).

The members of the Dismal Swamp Land Company voted on 12 June 1766 to contribute £300 for the operation of the company. Twenty-five pounds was GW’s “proportion” (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 194).

GW charged £12.18 against the accounts of each of his wards in 1766, 1767, and 1768 for one year of music lessons. See Cash Accounts, April 1765, n.2.

See note 23 below.

There were at this time two slaves named Sam at Mount Vernon.

The two payments to William Carlin were “for Tayloring” clothes for GW and John Parke Custis (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 217).

Francis Turnley’s (Tunley’s) wages as overseer of Home House farm during the past year were £15, of which £8.10.6 was due him in his final settlement with GW at this time (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 221).

GW charged John Parke Custis’s account 17s. 6d. on 19 May 1766 for Dr. William Rumney’s attendance on the boy (Guardian Accounts, 11 April 1767).

James Cleveland’s share of the crops made in 1765 on River farm where he was overseer came to £49.5.8, not counting his share of the hemp which was to be credited to him “when it is broke & made ready for Market” (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 195).

GW probably is referring to the Great Falls on the Potomac.

A hackle is an instrument for combing flax or hemp.
