1. GW records on 6 Feb. 1766 the sale of 86 pounds of hemp to John Snowden for £2.3. In a later undated entry GW credits Snowden £7 for “netting me a Sein & Rigging D[itt]o—Hemp &ca found him—he spun it” (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 94).

2. Joseph Lane (d. 1796) was the son of William Lane of Nomini Forest, Westmoreland County. See final entry in Contra, below.

3. After recording under the date 23 Feb. receiving from Valentine £21 in cash and a bull valued at £3.10, GW showed in his account Crawford still owing him £25.2.2. 4. A hemp brake was an instrument for beating and crushing hemp.

5. This is probably Upper Cedar Point in Maryland, just across the Potomac River from Chotank Creek in what was then Stafford County, Virginia. GW’s brother Samuel had a plantation near Chotank Creek. Lower Cedar Point was several miles downriver, just below Laidler’s ferry.

6. In GW’s account with his brother Samuel, an entry dated 22 Dec. 1765 shows Samuel Washington paying Robert Alexander £12 for GW and an entry dated 12 Feb. 1766 records GW’s payment of the £12 to Samuel Washington.
